TITLE: Handa’s Surprise
AGE GROUP: 6-9
CHARACTERS: 12 students (there are 24 students in my class, so we will represent it twice)
Handa, Akeyo, a monkey, an elephant, an ostrich, a zebra, a giraffe, an antelope, a parrot, a goat and 2 narrators.
SYNOPSIS:
The play is based on the storytale with the same name.
Handa is a girl from Kenya who to visit a friend, named Akeyo, who lives in a different village. As a present she takes a basket with seven different pieces of fruit and in her way she wonders which fruit Akeyo will like best.
However, Handa doesn’t realize that in her way different animals are eating her fruit from the basket till it’s empty!
But a goat “helps” her to get the basket full again and give Akeyo and herself a surprise.
CHARACTER OBJECTIVES:
Handa: is a nice girl who wants to visit her friend and give her a surprise.
Akeyo: is the girl receiving the surprise and is very happy.
Monkey, elephant, ostrich, zebra, giraffe, antelope, parrot: want to eat the fruit from Handa’s basket.
Goat: wants to run away and unconsciously helps Handa.

SCENE BREAKDOWN:
Scene 1: in Handa’s village
Handa is getting ready to set off and prepares the basket of fruits
Scene 2: in the savanna
Handa is walking through the savanna thinking about Akeyo’s favourite fruit and the surprise, and meanwhile the animals are eating the fruit.
The goat runs away and bumps onto a tangerine tree filling the basket again.
Scene 3: in Akeyo’s village
Handa and Akeyo finally meet and they both get a surprise.
